Great Children’s Books for Thanksgiving
I’ve just realized that Thanksgiving is only three weeks away and I have nothing prepared, not that there is really anything to prepare this year because we are not hosting. However, children should be prepared to know what Thanksgiving is all about (no, it’s not just about the fabulous turkey and stuffing).
Here are a few great books to help the kiddos understand the traditions and history of Thanksgiving and America.
Giving Thanks: The 1621 Harvest Feast
Kate Waters and Russ Kendall present a reenactment of that first holiday, Giving Thanks: The 1621 Harvest Feast. Photographs were taken on Massachusetts’ Plimoth Plantation, and two boys, a Wampanoag boy, and a six-year-old Puritan boy, become interested in each other’s culture.
On The Mayflower
A historically accurate account of the Mayflower passage to America with characters that grade schoolers can identify with. The author explains her research and there are full color photographs of the Mayflower II.
A Plump and Perky Turkey
A Thanksgiving without Turkey? Pete, a feathered fowl, responds to an ad for a model for a craft project but steals off with the end product.
Five Silly Turkeys
Toddlers love this one about five turkeys who sun themselves and dance.
Thanksgiving Is for Giving Thanks
Teach the littles why Thanksgiving is for giving thanks and have them start telling you what they are thankful for.
Some more of my favorites:
The Night Before Thanksgiving (Reading Railroad Books)
Duck for Turkey Day
Giving Thanks: A Native American Good Morning Message (Reading Rainbow Book)

Marcie,
Have you read Louisa May Alcott’s An Old Fashioned Thanksgiving? It is a great read aloud. We love it.
