Fave Old Movies – How about 12 Angry Men?
There was a time when a movie opening was a huge thing, met with great anticipation. Sure, that happens now, but most often the anticipation is saved for the Harry Potter and Twilight franchises. The odd big Hollywood star will have a big buzz before a movie, but it’s still not the same as before.
Old movies seem to have a much longer life span than the newer ones. There are so many people and companies producing movies, some good, some not so good, that the embarrassment of riches may be working against good quality cinema.
The old movies – the ones that relied on imagination rather than millions of dollars of special effects – made people think about what was going on. Of course, there were bombs, movies that were just plain awful, but others live on forever. Alfred Hitchcock is still well-known, even among younger movie viewers, for example. Actors and actresses of an era gone by give us images of glamor and good living.
Do you have any favorite old movies? One of mine is 12 Angry Men (also found as Twelve Angry Men), with Henry Fonda. Although he is the most memorable in the movie (in my opinion), the cast included many well-known and respected actors:
- Martin Balsam
- John Fiedler
- Lee J. Cobb
- E.G. Marshall
- Jack Klugman
- Edward Binns
- Jack Warden
- Joseph Sweeney
- Ed Begley
- George Voskovec
- Robert Webber
The movie was remade for a made-for-TV movie and, even though there were some good name actors, it wasn’t the same quality as the original, by any stretch of the imagination.
