What are Your Kids Really Reading?

Do you really know what your kids are reading, if they are reading at all? When I was teaching I required ALL of my middle school students to read and report back on it. It was very seldom that students in my classes could get away with NOT reading. WHY? Because there were too many loopholes.

But, as a parent do you know what your kids are reading?

I had/have a library of middle school level books that my husband hates (only because it is so big). I had a vast collection of Accelerated Reader books, books similar to the Gossip Girl series (these came out just as I went on adoption leave), and even adult level books for my higher level readers.

But, as parents, do you know that your kids are reading books like Push: A Novel, or Cut? One is way over the top for some kids (even though it is now a major motion picture) and one is relevant to middle and high school life. Do you know the difference? Some teachers do and some teachers don’t. Some parents do because they pay attention and ask questions, do the research, and talk to teachers.

How do you watch what your children read? Do you censor?
