A fifteen-month-old Goldendoodle pup, that almost never barks found his voice and saved his family’s life during the Christmas season.

As a holiday treat, Evelyn Janes decided to campout on the floor with her six-year-old twins in front of the Christmas tree, while her oldest daughter Brainna was spending the night with a friend, and their father was working a late shift. Evelyn Janes of Haverhill stated she woke at 4 a.m. to the loud barking of their dog Bear, who was making enough racket to shake the heavens, which was highly unusual for him.

After sitting and looking around toward the area in which Bear was barking, Evelyn saw a bright light coming from the dining room, while looking out the door she could see flames shooting up the outside wall of her home.

As Evelyn gathered the twins up to race out the door, she was surprised to see two newspaper carriers about to pound on her door. Handing the twins over to them, she rushed back into the burning house to rescue Bear, who was still standing guard over his home.

The decision to campout with the twins and Bear in front of the Christmas tree probably saved their lives. The children’s bedroom was located in the portion of the house, which received the most fire damage.

As Evelyn exited her house with Bear, two of her neighbors that are also local firefighters came running barefoot into her yard wearing their pajamas to aid the family.

The two firefighters ran into the house without shoes, to check and make sure no one was still in any danger. As they returned through the door it became obvious they were thinking of the children, their arms were loaded with gifts from under the tree.

Evelyn described Bear and the two neighbors as her hero’s. The neighbors fought alongside the other firefighters without any shoes or gear; dragging the hoses and helping out in every way they could.

The Janes family along with Bear plans to come back to the neighborhood where they have lived for 11 years, to rebuild. Evelyn stated the family could never leave all their wonderful friends and the most remarkable neighborhood in the world.

Needless to say, Bear is not only a family pet, but he’s their hero too.

This story is truly a Christmas miracle, for the Jane family.

With U.S. spending on pharmaceutical drugs exceeding 300 billion dollars in 2010, it goes to show how large a part the pharmaceutical industry plays in our economy. That being said, recent growth in the industry has been sluggish and has steadily declined from 18% growth in 2001, to a mere 2.3% increase in 2010. It is suggested that this sluggish growth is the result of an increased use in generic brands and a loss of patents for the major branded products (a similar fate that led Vicodin to go from top seller to a generic pill once they had lost their patent). Nevertheless, aggregate spending has been increasing over the years, and it brings to light the question: which prescription pills do we spend the most money on?

The following is a list of the top five products by spending, taken from the IMS institute for healthcare informatics. Prospective Pharmacy Technicians read closely:

1. Lipitor

Often referred to as Atorvastatin and sold by the company Pfizer, Lipitor reduces blood cholesterol to help fight cardiovascular disease. It helps prevent strokes by stabilizing plaque and using anti-inflammatory methods. Although Lipitor is number one on the list, its current figures have declined steadily since 2006. At the end of 2006, spending for Lipitor was at 8.6 billion dollars. Today, spending on Lipitor has declined to 7.2 billion dollars.

2. Nexium

Esomeprazole, a drug marketed as Nexium and developed by AstraZeneca, helps alleviate gastro-esophageal reflux (GERD), commonly referred to as “Heart Disease.” Nexium works by reducing the gastric acid buildup in the stomach during times of digestion. Spending on Nexium has increased steadily from 5.1 billion dollars in 2006 to 6.3 billion dollars currently.

3. Plavix

Clopidogrel, marketed as Plavix and developed by the company Bristol-Myers Squibb is an anti-platelet agent that helps alleviate coronary artery disease. In March 2010, the FDA announced a black box warning sign on Plavix alerting patients for potential ineffectiveness of the product. Even so, Plavix still remains third on the list of pharmaceutical by spending. Placix has seen extraordinary growth in spending in recent years. Spending on Plavix was at 2.9 billion dollars in 2006, whereas today, Plavix ranks at number three on the list with 6.1 billion dollar spending despite the FDA’s black box warning.

4. Advair Diskus

Fluticasone/salmeterol, marketed as Advair and distributed by GlaxoSmithKline, is a formula used to treat asthma or chronic pulmonary disease. It works with steroidal power to, when inhaled, open up the lungs, making oxygen intake more efficient. Advair Diskus has not seen much growth in the past five years, with only a marginal 0.7 billion dollar increase from 3.9 billion in 2006 to 4.6 billion today.

5. Abilify

Aripiprazole, marketed as Abilify and distributed and developed by Otsuka in collaboration with Bristol-Myers Squibb, is an anti-psychotic used to treat bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and depression. Like Plavix, Abilify has shown remarkable growth. In 2006, spending on Abilify was at 1.9 billion dollars, whereas today, spending is above 4.5 billion. Although aggregate spending on drugs is not a clear indicator of the drug’s demand, it is certainly interesting that an anti-psychotic has risen to such great heights in recent years. Pharmacy technicians surely have witnessed higher amounts of Abilify since 2006.

What women really want, and you’ll be glad to hear its not an oversized, overpriced piece of jewelry or a proposal.

It is a common male mistake to assume that women want lavish and ridiculously expensive gifts to even consider that you may in fact love them or even like them. I am here to put your minds and this myth to rest. Whether you are in a relationship or single, choosing a valentines present for the girl you like is easy if you stick to these simple rules of gift giving.

Keep it personal

Think of something you know she likes or has mentioned before, even if it’s the perfume she always wears is great, the fact you have noticed and taken initiative will be a gift in itself. If you’re not sure what perfume she wears or even if you do, gain extra brownie points for telling her how great she smells and then asking what fragrance it is. Avoid anything too mushy, photo frames or personalized key rings, mouse mats or mugs are a no go, I repeat NO GO.

Girls Love funny

Shared an in joke or laughed along to the same comedian? This is all gift ammunition. Ladies love a guy with a sense of humor, so show your funny side by picking out something that reminds you both of something that made you laugh or play it safe with a DVD of her favorite comedy show. If money is no object and you want to secure a meet up at a later date, or you’re in a relationship and the hope is you will be together come new year; book tickets to a comedy night. Its one of the oldest tricks in the book, but it works every time. Funny = Irresistible.

Can I help you?

It can be really annoying when you go in to a department store or shop and the sales assistant stalks you, asking if they can help; but this is the one time you do. Explain what it is you are looking to buy, how much you want to spend and more importantly who it is for. If they are any good at their job they will ask you other follow up questions to help you decide and give you options to choose from. Remember though, there is no pressure to buy what they show you, if you don’t think she will like it, don’t buy it, and try another store. This goes for cosmetics at a department store for the girl you recently been seeing to sexy lingerie for your long term girlfriend. Simple as, don’t be afraid to ask.

Women are from Venus

You may think that by purchasing your girl anti wrinkle cream because she always talks about how old she looks, or a gym membership as she moans about wanting to get fit, that these ideas would be fantastic. They are not. Whilst we women want you to sympathize with our concerns about ageing and needing to shed a few pounds we definitely do not want you to agree with us. Yes women are complicated, but no this is not an acceptable excuse when we are mortified by your gift of choice. Likewise if she sincerely explains that she doesn’t really want anything this year, so not to worry, you are being tested. Be the best boyfriend ever by getting her something amazing anyway, and you can count on still being her no.1 man come New Year.

A new study shows dogs not only respond to the words and ministrations of humans, dogs can understand and anticipate the intentions of their people.

With skills equivalent to that of a 6-month-old human, dogs who were spoken to or who had direct eye contact with a person were more likely to follow that human’s gaze as it moved across the room than if the person didn’t make direct eye contact with them.

Research is shedding light on human-like qualities of domestic dogs in fact, one study in the July 2011 issue of Learning & Behavior found that domesticated dogs were more likely to beg food from a person looking at them as opposed to someone who wasn’t paying attention.

One expert found that dogs have the developmental abilities of a human 2-year-old, with the average dog capable of learning the meanings of 165 words.

Given the intelligence of service dogs I’m inclined to believe the intelligence of dogs goes well beyond a toddler, but then again, my dogs are people too.

The image here is of my dog Jake. Jake passed away a year ago, but through his entire life, I often commented on just how very much he was like a toddler. I could tell him to retrieve his teddy bear, he’d go get it – whether it was somewhere outside or in, he would find it and bring it back. When he’d get a new chew bone, he’d take it outside to share with his doggie buddies from up the road. There were so many times I’d pause at Jakes action in amazement at his ability to really understand me. He really was a very special pooch.

My three girls, Maggie, Effie and Molly are all very humanlike in so many ways. Their toddler style antics have me smiling every single day.

Do you have a dog that is smart and almost humanlike? What’s something your dog has done that has stopped you in your tracks, amazed at just how smart they are?

When you get a new pet they become part of your family. Dogs are loveable pets that happen to require a great deal of care. One of the decisions you’ll need to consider once getting a dog is whether or not you will have your dog spayed or neutered. This is a hot topic amongst breeders and those involved with animal rescues and shelters. The decision to have your dog spayed or neutered is a personal choice but while pondering this option; consider the pros and cons that weigh in with this topic.

Reasons to Spay or Neuter

Overpopulation:

One of the most important factors that many people stress as to why dog owners should get their pet spayed or neutered is because there are already so many stray dogs with thousands being killed each year because they had been abandoned, unwanted, lost or too much work for the family they were with. When dogs are simply abandoned they are forced to re-enter the world on their own and their wild instincts are forced to return. Dogs then become a risk to people, other animals and tend to cause damage to personal property. The goal of neutering or spaying dogs is to keep the population under control. A dog’s litter is typically about six puppies; a female can become pregnant as early as six months, then every six months after that.

Medical Benefits:

By spaying or neutering your animal you are reducing their chances of serious issues later on in life. Male dogs are less likely to develop testicular tumors and prostate problems. When a female dog is spayed before she goes into heat for the first time, she will be less likely to develop mammary tumors, ovarian cancer or a uterine infection. For both males and females, getting fixed also will help reduce the urgency to try and escape the yard in order to fulfill their animalistic desires. There have been many animals who’ve been hit by cars as they try to connect with the opposite sex to mate. Please note we are not suggesting that by neutering or spaying your dog you will not need to take safety measures, like an invisible fence, for your dog. Whether you neuter or not, we strongly encourage you to make sure your property is properly secured for your animal’s safety.

Temperament:

Another reason to spay and neuter your dogs is the benefit this procedure can offer to your pet’s temperament. When fixing your pet early in life, the dog is less likely to be aggressive and less likely to have mood swings associated with hormones. Your pet will be able to focus better as well. Additionally, dogs are less likely to mark their territory when spayed or neutered early on in life.

Reasons to Not Spay or Neuter

Pure Breed:

If you have a pure breed animal and are looking to breed your dog as a breeder, you of course would not want to spay or neuter your dog. Before you decide to become a breeder, make sure you do thorough research and understand the work and dangers that may come with breeding to both you and your dog.

Not Natural:

Some people are concerned with neutering and spaying their dog because it is medically interfering with how their animal was made, not wanting to mess with nature. Another is to willingly subject their beloved pet to the risks associated with anesthesia.

Become Lazy:

Getting your dog fixed may affect their temperament (many times for the better) and also their activity level – while their activity level may decline, they should still be taken on walks and played with for daily exercise. Some people may not want to chance the affect the procedure could have on their pet and choose to steer clear.

The choice is one only you, the pet owner can make. Hopefully we have given you some good information to help work through this decision on your own. Best of luck on your journey of being a great dog owner!

There are so many ways a family can cut down on expenditures. Parents should consider a few factors before they decide to buy something. It is important that they differentiate between necessities and wants, which is first step in judicious spending.

1. Budget

The first thing to do is draft a budget. In it, list your priorities. You should know what is important and what is not. Purchase what will benefit the whole family as opposed to focusing on individual needs. Explain to your children the need to prioritize. With time, they will appreciate that whatever financial decisions you make are for their own benefit. Your budget will outline what is a necessity and what is a luxury. If you only spend on necessities, you’ll instantly limit the amount of money you use.

2. Earn More
There are a number of ways a family can generate more revenue. Consider opening up a business from home. Sell your old goods on the internet. Spend your weekends doing housework, tutoring or gardening. Are you good at music? Give lessons. You can always beat someone else’s price, and it might even be fun!

3. Eat Right

Get used to making your own food at home. Ensure that you purchase the regular foods in bulk. Quit buying fast foods and junk. This will allow you save almost half the amount of cash you would have used. Buy nutritious foods that improve your health and grow your wallet. If you have a small garden, consider growing your own groceries. Plant a variety of your favorite. This will cut on costs, as you will not need to visit the grocery store every evening. You might even sell some of them and make a little money out of it.
Buy a freezer for storage of your food. Most foods go to waste as leftovers. You can store this and reuse it and make a meal out of it. Any remains should be stored as it will come in handy at one time or another.

4. Spend Smart

There are so many ways to manage your money better. For instance, baby sitters can be a huge inconvenience, as you have to accommodate them, provide food for them and still pay them. Try to share this task with your friends and neighbors – rotate who stays home on certain evenings. This will save on costs and you can spend this money on more useful ventures. Or, consider other options if you are in the habit of taking your family on vacations. There are so many local recreational and sporting centers that you can take your family to. Think about clothes! Instead of buying brand new clothes consider buying second hand ones. They are cheaper and are easily accessible. These are durable and will last for generations. Go to shops that have remarkable offers and purchase your family’s wears.

5. Bonus

Hire a financial adviser. They are the best people with the knowledge and skills that you will need if you want to save a considerable amount of money. They will give you the best investment tips and even give you booklets and guidelines that will be of great help to you.

Luxurious facials; an hour-long message; a mud bath, and all the relaxing you can imagine! That’s right, we are talking about the ever so desired spa vacation. Ahhh, it is sheer indulgence for your every cell – the perfect thank you for all of your hard work this past year. Is the ultimate spa vacation just a dream of yours because of you don’t feel comfortable leaving your beloved four-legged, furry friend while you pamper yourself? Then don’t. You heard us; there are spas out there that will gladly open their doors to both you and Fido. Before you start booking this well-deserved vacation, keep in mind some tips of what to expect and what to look for in a pet-friendly hotel and then, let the pampering begin!

The Fees: When searching for a pet-friendly spa hotel be sure to check out the fees associated with bringing your precious little pal. Some hotels may require reservations be made for a designated pet rooms, along with a non-refundable damage deposit and fee for your pet’s stay. Other hotels or resorts only require a fee for bringing Fido. Some hotels are strict about weight requirements of the pets they allow to stay. Make sure you know your financial obligations and ensure the quality is up to par. For example, how do they clean the rooms in-between visits? You need to make sure any lingering smells and messes are fully taken care of. Also, are there any sound violations or expectations for your pet? If so, take that in mind if Fido likes to express himself – you don’t want to make other guests uncomfortable. If you want to teach Fido when and when not to bark, consider a bark collar to assist with the training process.

Spa Treatments: While you are indulging in pure relaxation, where is Fido? There are some spas that will allow him to be right next to you and even enjoying some of the pampering himself. Wouldn’t Fido enjoy treatments like a jet-lag massage or dogicure? There’s no better way to top off a relaxing day than to secure a pet-friendly cabana for your dogs comfort, so you can enjoy the sights and fresh air.

Gourmet Treats: Some hotels will cater to your dog’s every desire, offering delicious chef-prepared meals for your pooch. Don’t like what’s on the menu, some resorts will even make made-to-order meals for Fido, specially requested by you to meet his dietary needs. More perks to look out for are hand-made treats, and other complimentary treats for your pup.

Exercise: Even though it’s a vacation, exercise is still needed, especially for Fido. Check to see if there are any dog parks or trails to enjoy a brisk morning walk with Fido. You can also look into local outdoor attractions, perhaps a mountain hike or run on a pet-friendly beach. Is your schedule too booked to worry about walks and runs? Some hotels offer dog-walking as a service, so the pet owner can fully engage in their own luxurious holiday.

Entertainment: On top of the perfect doggy bed, treats and services, some resorts will even provide dog-appropriate movies for your pup to keep them preoccupied while you enjoy everything the spa has to offer. Some even upgrade their service with a turn-down option for Fido.

Tailoring the perfect spa-vacation with Fido in tow is possible and quite doable. You just want to do a little research and find the perfect match for your personalities. Total relaxation and luxury is in your reach – go enjoy!
