Bed and Breakfast Style in the Dining Room

I am still floating on the pink fluffy cloud of Bed and Breakfast living since my weekend away a week ago. I just got so many ideas for my own house while I was there. Looking at the way that color had been used and balanced, at how things were displayed, and at what colors were used to achieve the overall effect was fascinating to me as an artist. I realized, once again, that the very nicest looking homes have vignettes, like a live painting, where items are displayed with an eye to balance and form.

The dining room where breakfast was served was butter yellow and a color that I would call colonial blue. The trim was very much the color of milk paint blue. The ceiling reflected an icy blue as well. So much of the time ceilings are totally forgotten and just have a coat of white ceiling paint. If you really want your room to look amazing and finished give it a color. I have a color called pecan on my ceilings but I once knew someone who painted her kitchen ceiling cranberry!

The blue in the chair rail height wall paper is a similar color to the blue transferware dishes hung on the walls.  The dishes are related by size and color but the designs are all different and they are put up almost randomly. The other thing was the room had lamps rather than overhead lighting. It gave it more warmth I think.

You would think that the checkerboard pattern would be too modern for this room but it works because of the color and it doesn’t have too stark a contrast.

This great marble topped buffet is against one wall of the room.

The lamps reflect into the mirror and help to add light to the room, keeping the blue from being too dark. Beautiful, isn’t it? The rich blue and the dark woods of the room give it opulence I think, while the buttery yellow keeps it light and airy.
