DIY Wedding Flowers
Flowers for your wedding can take a serious bite out of your budget. Or what if you’d prefer flowers that are one of a kind? Or even use silk flowers?
Why not make your own floral arrangements for your wedding?
When I got married I decided to do a combination of store-bought and hand-made flowers. I made my own bouquet, as well as my bridesmaid’s bouquets. I did go with boutonnieres & corsages from the florist though.
Start by deciding what flowers and colors you want in your bouquet. Are the flowers in season? Going with flowers that are out of season can add quite a chunk to your floral budget. Not sure what flowers are in season when? Check out this handy guide!
I wanted very simple bouquets of red roses, tied with ribbons in the wedding colors. Even though I had never tried making bouquets before, I felt it was worth the try. I bought a dozen roses and made a trial bouquet – it came together quickly and easily – I can do this!
Check with different florists to see if you can buy the flowers you want. Make sure to confirm the ready date for them. There’s nothing worse than having a misunderstanding about when you need something for your special day.
Make sure you have enough room to store your flowers before the wedding. I stashed the five dozens roses for my bouquets in buckets of water in a cool spot in my house. Some flowers need refrigeration or special handling, so check with the florist.
To save time, the night before the wedding, I trimmed all of the rose stems and gathered all of my supplies for building the bouquets. The morning of my wedding I used floral tape to wrap the bouquets and then tied them with ribbon.
I wrapped damp paper towels around the stems and stored the bouquets in a cooler while the wedding party got ready. I was so pleased with how the bouquets turned out – they were exactly what I wanted for my DIY wedding!

Great tips, Chloe. Thanks for sharing. We have an event coming up and the planning committee is debating whether to use fresh flowers or something more durable. To me, nothing beats fresh flowers.
