Embroidered Valentines

Did you know that February is National Embroidery Month?

In honor of that, I wanted to share a trio of embroidered Valentine’s Day cards that I created using embroidery floss, felt and buttons:

heart felt cards

I used pre-cut cards, which are available from the “big” craft stores – and they even come with their own envelopes!  I found a package of mini heart buttons in the fabric decor aisle and tossed those into my basket at the last minute.

Starting from the top left, for this card I just cut simple heart shapes out of craft felt, using my pinking shears.  I used a running stitch to stitch the layers of felt together.  Good quality white craft glue (I like The Ultimate) anchors the felt hearts and buttons to the card.

The top right card is pretty much the same technique, except for this one I cut a square of felt out to stitch the hearts to.

The bottom card is a little more time-consuming.  I got all inspired and went to town with my French knots.  Lots and lots of French knots (if you’re a lefty, here are some great instructions for you)!  I cut three hearts out of felt and stacked the two smaller ones together first.  Those got stitched together, and that sandwich got embroidered to the largest heart.  I find it easiest to just sew through two layers of felt, rather than three layers.

Making embroidered cards doesn’t have to be difficult – you can even embroider right on the card itself.  In fact, I’ve even done this craft with kids as young as five…
