Sign for Babies Sunday – Mommy
Teaching babies some basic signs can help their brains to develop faster and can improve their language skills once they begin to talk. However, a lot of moms are overwhelmed at the thought of learning and teaching baby sign language on top of dealing with colic, colds and feeding schedules. I used to think it was too much to deal with, too. Then, I had some training before I taught a series of baby time classes at the library and realized that I didn’t need to learn the whole thing at once to teach a few signs to babies. Neither do you.

No, what you need is to learn one sign each week to pass on to your baby. Then, you can repeat that sign several times each day as you say the word. (You will also want to review past signs. Just use the sign a few times during the week as you say the word to reinforce your child’s signing vocabulary.)
So, we’re going to have Sign for Babies Sunday. Today’s word is Mommy. Put your right thumb on your chin under your lip, fan your fingers and move your hand back and forth a few times. Say the word as you sign it and repeat it several times so your child associates the gesture with the word. If you are a visual learner, this video of the mommy sign can help. I prefer to smile happily at a child as I sign, but I guess the site is concerned about facial expressions distracting children from the sign, so the signer is decidedly not smiling!
If you prefer to have visual aids you can carry around, the deck of baby sign cards is really useful and is what I used to remind me of the signs I was teaching.
