Winter means soup

soupThe French have a good way to get vegetables into kids. “Mange ta soupe!” is standard table talk–”Eat your soup!” Summer or winter, it’s the same. My son heard those words every day in Corsica, and he did.

And soup is good food. Leek and potato soup. Watercress soup. Butternut  pear soup. Carrot ginger soup. Do you notice something? Vegetables. All sorts of vegetables.

You can make soup dinners fun, too. Black bean soup? Set out bowls of sour cream, cheese, fresh diced tomato, even guacamole and let the family customize to their hearts’ content (The Six O’Clock Scramble has a great recipe for black bean and tomato soup).

Simple meals settle into your heart. I have great memories of a hot bowl of soup after running around in the cold. A grilled cheese sandwich. A glass of milk. A silly conversation with mom, sitting around the kitchen table.

And a good soup will get your kid smiling about eating her vegetables.
