Should We Share Our Travel Photos on Social Media?
Nowadays so many people are posting, on social media, every and all photos they take.
These might be travel scenics, photos of friends and family and even those of strangers who happen to appear in a scene. Some might be posed and others candid. Some can be flattering while others not so.
Most people don’t know about getting other people’s permission for posting their photos. In my work as a journalist, I’ve lived in a world where an editor required written permission before he/she would use photos of other people and their homes. If they were of children under 18, we needed the parent or guardian’s permission.
As a travel writer, I often overcame this by using photos taken by my family and of my family. However, I would have their permission to use the photos and didn’t submit any that were unflattering.
Nowadays, on social media, blogs and web sites, so many people post any and all photos they take. Some think it’s funny to post unflattering candid photos. However, what does the person in the photo think?
When travelers snapped photos to put into albums and share with friends and relatives as a slide show or on video, there was limited distribution. In today’s world, with YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and personal blogs, these photos, when posted, are available for more than a close circle to see.
You also open yourself up to legal ramifications if you post photos taken of other people without their permission.
What has been your experience with travel photos?
